Recent Cutting Edge Estonian Short Films

Filmmakers Heilika and Ülo Pikkov have carefully selected the most exciting Estonian short films of the last few years. You can see documentaries, animations as well as fiction films from different authors. There are both festival hits and undiscovered hidden film gems.

Watchmaker controls the time, but the mouse living in the watchmaker’s workshop controls the clocks… This is a film about time and its ephemeral nature.

Autumn 1944 in Tallinn, Estonia; German forces retreat as the Russian army settles in. Young soldier Aleksei is sent from the frontline to work in a prison filled with Estonian political prisoners. While doing his rounds at night Aleksei is stirred by the beautiful voice of Saale, an Estonian girl singing to the prisoners from the other side of the prison walls. He learns that the Russian military police plans on capturing Saale; Aleksei must risk his own safety to warn her before it is too late.

Digital pet cat Miisu gets tired of her owner and starts to revolt. Inspired by Tamagotchi, the film observes the world through the eyes of digital pets.

This musical documentary is about bluegrass, gospel and God. Robirohi is not a very well-known band in Estonia. Most of their concerts are held in churches and congregations, their soulful music gets little plays on non-Christian radio stations. The band would love to be famous one day – but is gospel the right path to take? Especially in Estonia, one of the most secular countries in the world. They book their dream tour to America, to look for a righteous way at the home of gospel music, but the Almighty has a different plan...
